August Monthly Meeting: Radio Spies and D-Day, with a local connection!

Our August Meeting presentation is all about radio spying during World War 2- and the role that an Army Signal Intelligence Service (SIS) radio listening post near Warrenton VA played in the D-Day invasion at Normandy. Our featured speaker, Mike Washvill from the Cold War Museum, will discuss how the HF radio intercept capabilities of Vint Hill Farm Station provided information about German Coastal Defenses along the English Channel, and the unwitting Axis diplomat whose communiques provided the clues. It’s a fascinating story you don’t want to miss!

Now located on the original site of the SIS listening post, the Cold War Museum has on display many artifacts of the Cold War era in which Vint Hill Farm Station played an active part. They also have a room dedicated to the SIS Listening Station that features radio equipment and artifacts from the station’ s active years. It’s well worth a visit if you haven’t been there.

This is a good opportunity to get out of the house, meet other Club members, and make
new friend via the HF Bands. We’ll be using the Club Flex radio using the Club call
K4XY. Our goal (besides having fun), is to seeking QSOs from the following five states:
AK, ID, NM, NV & UT. Why? … once confirmed, we’ll have worked all 50 states in2026,
and we can seek the coveted ARRL Worked All States Award 250.

If you have not made your first contact using SSB, this a great opportunity. Not to worry
about your license class as we’ll have control operators to assist you. Not familiar with
the FLEX 6700 radio, again, we’ll show you the tricks. Want to configure your laptop for
using the Club Remote radio? Bring your laptop with you to the NAQP event.

If you have questions or are not feeling courageous enough to get on the air, there will
be plenty of people to ask questions or help you out. Join us, meet new people, and
enjoy the fun.
