Public Service

The Vienna Wireless Society was founded, in part, to promote activities that use radio communication skills and knowledge while serving the public interest and welfare. Specifically, many of the Club’s members are trained and certified to provide emergency communications support to the local communities and emergency service organizations.

You can find Club members providing emergency communications assistance during a state or national natural disaster response, as well as assisting the Dyer-Gunnell American Post 180 or the town of Vienna during their annual Halloween Parade or various community-sponsored 5k races along the Washington & Old Dominion RR trail. Club members also support the annual Marine Corps Marathon by providing voice and digital communications assistance to the medical teams.

Club members are certified in the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), AUXCOMM (AUX-C), and Military Auxiliary Radio System (MARS) operators. Many Club members are active members in Fairfax County Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT).
